Israel Snubs Obama’s Peace Efforts

Plan for Palestinian state is ‘dead end,’ Israel tells U.S.

JERUSALEM — In a direct challenge to President Barack Obama’s commitment to rejuvenate moribund Mideast peace talks, Israel on Thursday dismissed American-led efforts to establish a Palestinian state and laid out new conditions for renewed negotiations.

Leaders of Israel’s hawkish new government told former Maine Sen. George Mitchell, the special U.S. envoy, that they aren’t going to rush into peace talks with their Palestinian neighbors. …

Mitchell made it clear that the Obama administration sees the two-state solution as the foundation for future talks. …

Netanyahu has refused to embrace that formula and has instead floated the idea of offering Palestinians limited rights that would fall short of independence. …

Can the United States put pressure on Israel?:

A user’s guide. by Stephen Martin Walt, professor of international affairs at Harvard University.

… Are there usable sources of leverage that the United States could employ to nudge Israel away from the vision of “Greater Israel” and towards a genuine two-state solution? Here are a few ideas:

It is out of control. How have “We the people” allowed so many others to take command of our nation’s policies. We need responsible people in Congress.

Our mainstream media bear some of the blame. But … for the most part we need to point the finger at ourselves. – We are uninformed.

Obama wants Israel to hold parallel talks with Palestinians and Syria. (Snips)

The Obama administration is preparing a Middle East peace process that will include simultaneous bilateral talks between Israel and the Palestinians, and between Israel and Syria. The plan is based on the Arab peace initiative that offers establishing normal relations between Israel and Arab League states in exchange for withdrawing from the occupied territories and establishing a Palestinian state. …

U.S. reaffirms two state commitment. April 17, 2009

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. State Department released three statements from its Middle East envoy emphatically affirming support for Palestinian statehood.

The statements, broadcast in video-clips posted Friday on the State Department’s website, are extracted from George Mitchell’s visit last week to Israel and the Palestinian areas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new government has refused to commit to a two-state outcome.

Three times Mitchell emphasizes that the two state outcome is central to U.S. peace brokering efforts in the region. “Policy of the United States under President Obama is clear,” Mitchell says in one clip, flanked by U.S. and Israeli flags. “Beyond any doubt it is in the United States’ national interest that there be a comprehensive peace settlement in the Middle East which would include settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a two-state solution involving a Palestinian state living side by side alongside the Jewish state of Israel in peace and hopefully stability and prosperity.”

Subject: Israel – A two State Solution is the right Approach.

    Dear President Obama,

The quarrels between Israelis and Palestinians has gone on for 61 years. – The Middle-East is a dangerous powder keg.

The Palestinians have been treated brutally and unfairly. – Israel’s colonization must end.

Please consider strong measures to stop Israel’s belligerent right-wing government from blocking the peace process.

It is time for you to become an honest broker. – Now !!!!!

    Thanks,

U.S.: Palestinians need not recognize Israel as Jewish state before talks.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s demand that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people as a condition for renewing peace talks is unacceptable to the United States, the State Department said during special envoy George Mitchell’s visits over the weekend to Ramallah and Cairo. …

Mitchell’s talks also seem to indicate that the United States does not accept Netanyahu’s position that the renewal of negotiations should be postponed until the Iranian nuclear threat is removed. …

… It is time to recognize that settlement of the West Bank is a commandment which came not from God, but from rabbis, which is to say, all too often, from politicians.

    5. Thou Shalt Not Steal, Nor Covet That Which Is Your Neighbor’s.

    6. Thou Shalt Not Murder.

Both the Jews and the Palestinians have valid claims to the Holy Land. If the Holy Land is to be shared, Israelis and Palestinians both will have to sacrifice legitimate grievances for the sake of a livable future, one which honors ancestors by making it possible for children to grow and thrive.

Finally, and most importantly, it is time for Jews to recognize how lethal the occupation is, to the idea of maintaining a Jewish state. …

In the end, the question of whether Israel will be a Jewish state will not depend on what the Palestinians say, but on what the Jews do.

    9. Thou Shalt Not Look Away.

    10. Thou Shalt Use the Word Occupation ….

“Controlling 3.5 million Palestinians cannot go on forever,” … If the last 40 years are any indication, the Palestinians will be able survive the occupation. A healthy state of Israel will not. …
