AIPAC in Focus

Sitting between Bibi and Obama, AIPAC criticized by left and right

Picking on AIPAC? (Snips)

… AIPAC is generally regarded as one of the three most powerful lobbies in Washington. Unlike most other major lobbies, which engage on a variety of issues, AIPAC has only one objective: strengthening American support for the state of Israel through creation of a “special relationship” between the two countries. AIPAC’s support is uncritical, no matter what Israel does and no matter what the impact on the U.S. might be. Because Congress and the White House are fearful of confronting AIPAC, it enjoys a unique status. Even though it acts as a foreign lobby, it has not been required to comply with the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Not having to register is significant, as it means that AIPAC’s sources of income and its disbursements are not a matter of public record. …

The third reason to oppose AIPAC is the corruption of the U.S. political system by the Lobby’s money and power, resulting in a bought-and-paid-for Congress and a rule of law for everyone except those guilty of crimes on behalf of Israel. Even when one is caught red-handed and confesses to spying for Israel, it is apparently no big deal, aside from the cost of a lawyer. Israel runs an extremely aggressive espionage program inside the United States involving hundreds of operatives and agents

Obama-Bibi: The Preview

LA Times: I cannot recall a more important meeting between an American president and an Israeli prime minister than today’s meeting between President Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Will the Obama administration have the courage to challenge Netanyahu, or will all the talk of change dissolve in the face of a concerted one-two punch from Netanyahu and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee? I am increasingly convinced that if Obama fails to speak out now, it will doom the two-state solution forever. ….

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”

    Obama – AIPAC Petition

I was shocked to learn that you will be giving a key speech at the AIPAC policy conference this weekend. AIPAC spreads confusion and lies about the conflict in Israel and Palestine, blackmails Congress to sign its legislation and fund Israeli war crimes, and is embroiled in treason and espionage. AIPAC demands unquestioning support of Israel, which severely undermines American legitimacy in the region. By speaking at the AIPAC’s policy conference, you are strengthening AIPAC and hurting America.

Over the past decades, the Israeli leaders have time and again found ways to avoid negotiations. The latest excuse is the Fatah-Hamas unity agreement. The US should insist that Israel’s leadership stop making excuses and engage directly with the newly-reunited, democratically-elected Palestinian leadership.

Our government should be supporting the spread of democracy in the Middle East, bringing our tax dollars home instead of giving Israel $3 billion a year, and distancing ourselves from human rights abuses wherever they occur, including Israel. It is time for a foreign policy that serves the American people, not a foreign lobby group like AIPAC.
