GOPers launch lawmakers’ Israel missions.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Twenty-five Republican and 31 Democratic members of the U.S. Congress are traveling to Israel during their August recess.

The GOP mission, which began Monday, is being led by House of Representatives Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the only Jewish Republican in the Congress. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) will lead the Democratic trip, which begins Saturday.

The American Israel Education Foundation, a charitable organization affiliated with the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, is financing both missions.

The GOP lawmakers met Monday with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and participants on both trips are scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, along with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In an Op-Ed in the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, Cantor wrote Monday that both trips would send a “crucial message to the Israeli people: Congress’ commitment to the U.S.-Israel relationship remains steadfast,” and that differences over a settlement freeze shouldn’t obscure the “big picture” — the threat from Iran ….

According to former IDF captain Reuven Schossen
it is common knowledge in Israel that Israel
controls US politicians by political donations.

  2. worzzz Says:

For every dollar that Israel pays US politicians under the table, it reaps astronomical sums and benefits.

  3. worzzz Says:

Isn’t it the pits – Our own elected representatives accept bribes for providing massive benefits to Israel. They are more loyal to Israel then the US. –

Great care is taken to hide the names of these 56 representatives junketing to Israel. Voters might become suspect. …. and rightly so.

Not “educational trips” but “indoctrination” and “payola”

The hidden cost of free congressional trips to Israel. ( by Jim Abourezk, former Senator from S.D.)

Branded as ‘educational,’ these trips offer Israeli propagandists an opportunity to expose members of Congress to only their side of the story …

The pro-Israel lobby does most of its work without publicity. But every member of Congress and every would-be candidate for Congress comes to quickly understand a basic lesson. Money needed to run for office can come with great ease from supporters of Israel, provided that the candidate makes certain promises, in writing, to vote favorably on issues considered important to Israel. What drives much of congressional support for Israel is fear — fear that the pro-Israel lobby will either withhold campaign contributions or give money to one’s opponent.

In my own experience as a US senator in the 1970s, I saw how the lobby tries to humiliate or embarrass members who do not toe the line.

These trips are defended as “educational.” In reality, as I know from my many colleagues in the House and Senate who participated in them, they offer Israeli propagandists an opportunity to expose members of Congress to only their side of the story. The Israeli narrative of how the nation was created, and Israeli justifications for its brutal policies omit important truths about the Israeli takeover and occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Members of Congress may not be aware just how damaging their automatic support for Israel is to America’s interest.

Ethics rules approved in 2007 bar lawmakers from taking trips longer than two nights at the expense of corporations, unions and others that employ lobbyists. But Congress imposed fewer limits on travel paid for by non-profits, such as AIPAC’s American Israel Education Foundation.

Scandal Fallout May End Israel Trips. (Snips)

… Jewish groups have used trips to Israel as a key tool to help lawmakers, especially non-Jewish members of Congress, understand the significance of the Jewish state and its need for political support. Such trips have helped the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other groups sensitize Congress to Israeli concerns.

“I don’t think you can overstate how important it is,” said Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. Jewish leaders say the trips change politicians’ views on Israel. …

AIPAC has sent numerous lawmakers to Israel over the years through the American Israel Education Foundation. The group has sponsored separate trips of Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the House Democratic whip, and Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), then the House majority whip.

These trips include extensive travel in Israel and meetings with key leaders. Travel has been credited with helping lawmakers see controversial topics – such as the West Bank barrier and Gaza Strip withdrawal – in a light favorable to Israel. ….

One suggested rule, proposed by Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), would forbid lobbyists from paying for or participating in trips by lawmakers, and would prevent trips sponsored by organizations that perform any lobbying activities. Many Jewish groups perform some lobbying activities and likely would be included in the ban …

WASHINGTON — Jewish organizations played a leading role in defeating the effort, launched in response to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, to ban privately funded trips for members of Congress.

Israel is the number one foreign destination of privately funded congressional trips, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Washington’s powerful pro-Israel lobby, is the second largest underwriter of such overseas travel.

When going on Aipac-funded trips “you’d better hold your breath, because you don’t do anything but go to meetings,” … “educational” trips … “The whole concept of privately financed travel is an extension of lobbying activity by interest groups, with very few exceptions, and Aipac is not one of those exceptions,” … “When the spinning is all done by one side, that is not a true educational experience,” but “something that rather resembles propaganda,” …

    It is a secret.

The names of the 56 US congressmen who traveled to Israel this month for “educational purposes’” cannot be determined. – I have tried my ‘darndest‘. — No other country receives such a massive entourage from the US Congress. — Should the voters not know what’s going on?
