Scandal – Snatching human Organs.

Top Sweden newspaper says IDF kills Palestinians for their organs.

A leading Swedish newspaper reported this week that Israeli soldiers are abducting Palestinians in order to steal their organs, a claim that prompted furious condemnation and accusations of anti-Semitic blood libel from a rival publication.

“They plunder the organs of our sons,” read the headline in Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, the left-leaning Aftonbladet, which devoted a double spread in its cultural section to the article.

Swedish newspaper prints second organ harvesting article. August 24, 2009

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Swedish newspaper has published a second article accusing the Israeli army of harvesting Palestinian organs.

A Palestinian family in the West Bank told the newspaper, Aftonbladet, in an article published Sunday that the body of their 19-year-old son, killed by Israeli soldiers in 1992, was returned to them wrapped in bandages and that they found a scar running from his neck to his stomach. The newspaper published a picture that the family said is their son’s body, showing the scar. The IDF told the family the scar was from an autopsy.

The article calls on Israel to investigate the issue to put a stop to the rumors or to the practice.

…. “What’s even worse is that by making the preposterous demand for a government condemnation, the debate has changed from anti-Semitism to freedom of speech in Sweden: Instead of concentrating on debunking the story, they have made it a freedom of speech issue. The government is not going to condemn the article – freedom of speech here is sacrosanct,” added Posner, who said she could see how the Swedish mainstream media, which at first attacked the tabloid for printing the piece, were now supporting it, based on the principle of preserving the freedom of speech ….

… In the article Bostrom mentions an incident in which a Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers for hurling stones at their vehicle in the northern West Bank city of Nablus. The Palestinian was shot in his chest, stomach and both legs – He was then moved to an unknown location while being in critical condition and approximately five days later, his body was returned to his family with a visible scar from his neck to stomach.

An autopsy report revealed that some of his organs were removed.

Bostrom believes a “shortage of organs for transplant in Israel is the real cause behind the violent crime and mentions a 1992 government campaign to recruit new donors [because] at the same time that this organ campaign was going on, young Palestinian men were disappearing and being delivered back to their villages five days later at night, dead and cut open,” …

Israeli lawyer sues ‘Aftonbladet’ in NY Court

Israeli lawyer Guy Ophir has filed a lawsuit against the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet over an article it published in which IDF soldiers were accused of harvesting organs from Palestinians.

The $7.5 million suit, which names the paper and writer Donald Bostrom, was filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday, according to Ophir, who said the article’s allegations were anti-Semitic and amounted to “racist blood libel” against Jews and Israeli soldiers. …

Illicit Body-Part Sales Present Widespread Problem.

…. Black-market sales of organs taken from bodies without family consent is an international problem, one that has sparked scandals in both the United States and Israel, said Nancy Scheper-Hughes, who is a medical anthropologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and an expert in global organ trafficking. In 2004, Israel’s chief state pathologist was removed from his post due, in part, to ethical violations surrounding organ “harvesting” from dead bodies. …

There was a long history of allegations, substantiated by the Israeli government, of Hiss and his lab taking organs from dead bodies without permission and using them for research or selling them to medical schools …

In 2001, an Israeli Health Ministry investigation found that Hiss had been involved for years in taking body parts, such as legs, ovaries and testicles, without family permission during autopsies, and selling them to medical schools for use in research and training. ….

    Organ trafficking.

According to organ trade expert Nancy Scheper-Hughes (in 2001), Israel had become a “pariah” in the organ transplant world. The lack of donations due to Jewish custom heightened the disparity between the supply and demand of organs. This led to the popularity of “transplant tourism” in which patients in need of organs travel to medical centres abroad to receive organs. Prior to the 2008 law prohibiting it, some Israeli organ brokers advertised on the radio and in newspapers. Kidneys, which are the most traded organ, may fetch up to $150,000 for brokers who usually pay the donors far less.

The lack of regulations against organ trafficking prior to 2008 made Israel a focal point for the international organ trade. Israelis are given up to $80,000 to pay for organs abroad. …

In 2004 a South African organ trading operation providing American, Iranian and Israeli recipients with organs from Brazilian, Russian and Romanian donors was raided by authorities in South Africa and Brazil, who arrested 15 members of the ring including a recipient and a donor. The donors were paid $10,000 for a kidney, while the recipients were charged $120,000 to receive one. The ring was allegedly controlled by an Israeli, Ilan Peri, who was arrested for tax evasion by the Israeli government who claims he owes $5 million and also for submitting false invoices to a government health plan for the South African organ donor operations. …

…. According to Sheper-Hughes, who is in the final stages of writing a book on organ trafficking, much of the world’s illicit traffic in kidneys can be traced to Israel.

“Israel is the top,” she said. “It has tentacles reaching out worldwide.”

Until March 2008, Israeli law allowed Israeli citizens to go abroad for live organ transplants from non-related donors. But there was no way for Israeli authorities to keep track of how many of those cases involved money changing hands, the country’s Health Ministry said.

Israeli investigators are looking intensively at illegal organ trafficking under the new law, the ministry said. And prosecutors in the West Bank town of Nazareth sent nine Israelis to jail in 2007 after uncovering a black-market ring that was buying and selling organs. ….

    The Autopsy Surgeon Aftonbladet Forgot

…. A justifiable question from the families relayed by Bostrom is: why did the army want the autopsies carried out? Unless it can be shown that the army intended to conduct investigations into the deaths — and there is apparently no suggestion that it did — the autopsies were unnecessary.

In fact, they were more than unnecessary. They were counterproductive if we assume that the army has no interest in gathering evidence that could be used in future war crimes prosecutions of its soldiers. Israel has a long track record of stymieing investigations into Palestinian deaths at the hands of its soldiers, and carried on that ignoble tradition in the wake of its recent assault on Gaza. ….

Getting our house in order first.

These days, while Norway and Sweden are fiercely attacked by Israeli ministers and Jewish leaders for being “anti-Semitic,” I would like to set the record straight on these two countries’ international human rights activity. …

…. Israel, on the other hand, was one of the last Western allies (if not the last) of the apartheid regime. In the 1970s, when Norway and Sweden were leading the international struggle against the apartheid regime, Israel was just getting into bed with the South African authorities, selling arms to the South African army while bypassing the UN arms embargo passed in 1977.

I would like to remind you of all this before we start shouting about the Scandinavian human rights record. We should look at our own first.
