Focus on AIPAC

TONIGHT: Senate Will Pass AIPAC’s Iran Sanctions Bill To Undercut Obama.

It appears that the 800 pound gorilla that is AIPAC has been eating regular. The Senate is prepared to vote tonight — under super expedited procedure — on AIPAC’s legislation that would impose onerous sanction on Iran, cutting the legs out of the President’s diplomatic strategy.

Note. This is being done in the dark of night although, on the good side, it takes only one senator to stop it (and he or she can do it anonymously). …

AIPAC Decides Next Week If California Senate Candidate Passes Muster on Israel

The lobby that supposedly doesn’t exist is being called in to determine if a GOP candidate for the US Senate, Tom Campbell, is sufficiently devoted to Israel’s interests. …

no one the Republicans come up with will be as loyal to AIPAC as Barbara Boxer, the Democratic incumbent. A progressive on every other issue, she is with AIPAC on all matters relating to Israel (including Iran). AIPAC will support her no matter who the GOP nominates. ….

Every so often the curtain lifts and you see that on this issue — as on most — politicians are invariably forced into line by the special interests. `I say forced because, never in a million years, would progressives support the AIPAC line if they were free to vote their conscience. They are not. (If we had public financing of campaigns, which will never happen, AIPAC would be down to 50 supporters in Congress, tops).

AIPAC – mooching the US Congress again: $3 billion for M.E. mischief

Each year, Congress casts a vote that has monumental impact on Israel’s ability to exist and defend herself.

The vote is for the international affairs budget. This year it has been sent to Congress with a request of $3 billion in vital security assistance to Israel. …

U.S. aid comprises about 20 percent of Israel’s overall military budget. It is this 20 percent that Israel uses to maintain a technological military edge over adversaries that threaten the Jewish state.

Rosen Fires Back in His Law Suit Against AIPAC.

Washington — The American Public Affairs Committee has frequently condoned its employees’ receipt of classified information, according to documents filed in federal court by lawyers for Steve Rosen, a former senior official of the pro-Israel lobby.

The new court filing, submitted December 15, offers Rosen’s response to claims by AIPAC that he acted improperly by obtaining classified information without the lobby’s knowledge while working on its behalf.
Citing internal AIPAC documents, Rosen’s attorneys are attempting to show that, to the contrary, the lobby frequently trafficked in classified information and was therefore unjustified in dismissing him and in publicly condemning him for handling such information.

In his filing, Rosen, who is seeking $20 million in damages in a defamation suit against AIPAC, provided the District of Columbia Superior Court with documents and transcripts that he believes demonstrate he acted in accordance with the lobby’s practices in receiving classified information from former Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin in the summer of 2004. ….

Congressman Howard Berman (D-CA), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is today rushing to the House floor with an AIPAC-drafted resolution condemning the Palestinians for publicly suggesting that, in the wake of Netanyahu’s refusal to freeze settlements and negotiate, they will consider a unilateral declaration of statehood. (As is usual with Berman, his resolution exclusively blames Palestinians for the collapse of peace talks; not a word of criticism of Israel appears.) ….

The Berman bill will pass overwhelmingly because that is how things work in a city where policy is driven by campaign contributions — and not just on this issue.

The only difference between how AIPAC lobbyists dictate U.S. Middle East policy and pretty much every other major lobby is that AIPAC works to advance the interests of a foreign country.

The House on Wednesday passed a resolution (H. Res. 1765) by voice vote that opposes any efforts by the Palestinian Authority to unilaterally declare statehood or seek recognition for a state outside of talks with Israel.

On eve of annual policy conference, a new administration and new Mideast realities pose major challenges for pro-Israel lobby giant …

Shadowing the conference will be the unfolding controversy enveloping Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), who was reportedly taped in a federal wiretap offering to intervene on behalf of two former AIPAC officials awaiting trial for passing along government secrets. At press time Harman was still scheduled as a policy conference speaker. …

While the press has made much of a new challenger on the scene — J Street, the pro-peace process lobby and political action committee — AIPAC retains an unmatched activist network in congressional districts across the country and connections to countless donors to political campaigns, a critical element in its reputation for Capitol Hill clout. …

Pro-Israel lobbyist sues over political ads

A pro-Israel lobbying group is accusing an ex-employee of using its mailing list and logo to target voters for California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman.

The Whitman campaign used the American Israel Public Affairs Committee logo twice in ads this year, even though AIPAC doesn’t endorse political candidates, AIPAC claims in a lawsuit.

Arie Lipnick, a Brooklynite and former AIPAC staffer, allegedly admitted to using the mailing list and logo without permission, and refuses to give them back.
